work, as they had inherited money, and were around to spend time with Mal and Benjamin. At four years old, Mal came home to find his parents had been brutally murdered. He went in and stayed there for a few minutes, in shock. When he finally went outside and started crying, a neighbor saw him and called the police. Covered in his parents blood, Mal was taken to the emergency room. He found out, later on, that Ben had been sitting in the room the whole time and had witnessed the death of their parents. Benjamin was put into an insane asylum for children, and Mal, without any relatives to speak of, was sent to an orphanage. He received a letter from Ben within a month telling him to find the KTS. Mal had heard of such a thing from his mother, who had once told stories of the place. Mal found them through channels, being the first child ever to discover the group on their own.So impressed by his skill, the then-president, Shauna Wittneger , asked that he be recruited. At the age of five, Malcolm was initiated into Division One, which was then in Italy. Being initiated at such a young age led to Mal spending the most time in the KTS than any other child had ever done. He lived through four Head’s and three Presidents before leaving. He has been called a prodigy not only because of the amount of time he spent as an agent, but for the impossible skill in which he possess. When Mal first entered Division One, he was taken under the wing of Richard , who was, at the time, proxy leader. When Mal was twelve, he was invited to become a member of the newly formed TOKO team.went in and stayed there for a few minutes, in shock. At thirteen, after Richard was killed, Mal was position as his successor. Everyone thought the position would have gone to the acting head, the then proxy leader, Scotty , or, as Richard had requested, Kim Lee , but the council and the president, Sophia Hoffstad , chose Mal to enter into the role untrained for such a position. He kept Scotty as his proxy leader until his release, and then unsurprisingly took his prodigy, and TOKO teammate, Kim as his proxy leader.

Although his death didn't hit Mal as much as he had thought it would, it affected him nonethless. Although he considered himself raised by Richard, he had slowly been breaking those bonds and becoming closer and closer with Ezra. Only once did Kim see Mal upset, which was after the funeral, when she caught him punching a wall over and over until his knuckles bled, pounding until the skin was raw too the bone. That was the one time he ever lost his cool, feeling he had to take over the position of Head by setting a good example.

Richard trained Mal, but warned him to keep his skill a secret, and to tone down his advancement as an agent, not showing anyone else his true levels. Because of this, Mal didn’t become proxy leader or even Head when he was young although he was more than qualified. Richard told Mal to do this because it would lead to him being executed as the KTS were too scared to have such a brilliant agent, though Richard later admitted, via letter read by Kim post-mourtem, that this was not the case. He told Mal to keep his skill contained so he would not be made Head and not put in a position of such power. With Division One emptying as more members came of age, Mal took the opportunity to re-do the Division, recruiting people of different skill levels. He chose David Taylor and Isadora Thompson from Stowde and Gwendolyn Archer from a separate DivisionTwo years later, forming what the current line-up of Division One.

Three years into his presidenacy, Mal received a letter from his brother's nurse, saying his brother had finally begun to be allowed visitors. Mal came to him, Ezra escorting him, and went to discover who killed his parents. Ben, although he hadn't spoken a clear word about the murder since it took place, was able to relate the deaths to Mal. When he discovered who murdered his parents, he left, after days of interrogating his own brother.

He tells Ezra that he didn't learn anything, and whether Ezra believes him or not is unclear, but he declines to comment, even when Kim and Bick question him about Mal's dissappearence.

On the eve of his sixteenth birthday, Division One, Two, Five, and Sixteen attacked one of the three bases of the GB mainframe. Mal, having planned his escape all along, runs up to the roof, planning to blow the building. As the rest of the team are making there way down, he slips out, going to the roof. Kim, noticing him, follows. She has noticed a change in him since he and Ezra went on that "trip" a month ago. She asks what it is. When he doesn't answer, she realizes that Richard was right all along. Mal wasn't strong enough to overcome the death of his childhood. But she also decided she knew Mal more that Richard did, and that he was really capable of surpassing his fate. She tried to convince him to stay. When he doesn't, she begs to let her and Bick go with him. Mal laughs, shocking a crying Kim. He says she has to choose. Him or Bick? Without thought, she chooses him. He only finds this amusing. He hands her the trigger, telling her to press the button. If she blows up the building, all her team will die. As she takes the button, she hesitates, and looking up at Mal, see's nothing recognizable in his eyes. She stumbles back, away from him. Spotting her hesitation, Mal knocks her out. As she falls asleep, she can here him say, "it looks like you chose... Kim." Mal carriers her to a forest where he deposits her body and presses her life support, alerting the KTS.
